Patent rights enable companies, firms and individuals to use specific technologies exclusively, and if someone violates these rights they can take action against them in the court of law. Such legal proceedings are becoming more common with the passage of time, especially within the information and technology industry (see Apple and Samsung here). With each passing day multiple individuals and companies file law suits against various firms or people who they believe were found violating these rights.

Wi-Lan Inc.an Ottawa-based patent house has taken a similar action against the famous Japanese electronics company Toshiba. The IP firm had filed their case against Toshiba at the district court of Florida in U.S. for the violation of two existing patents that are linked with display technology and digital TV. The details of the law suit were given out by Wi-Lan in a company announcement on Tuesday.

The validity of these claims by Wi-Lan will be known once the legal proceedings will commences against Toshiba in the court of law. However, till then readers will to have to sit tight and wait for any official verdict.

As far as Wi-Lan is concerned it is a company that holds a portfolio of technology related patents, which they give to companies in exchange for royalty payments. Therefore, if someone uses these patents without their permission or authorization, Wi-Lan holds the right to sue such a company in the court of law. Given this business model, this was not the first time that Wi-Lan has taken action against a company. In fact, the Ottawa firm, acting on similar grounds filed separate cases against Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent USA Inc at the start of this month. It remains to be seen how these proceedings will shape up.
