Uber Toronto Has Added SUVs to Their Private Driver Repretoire

San Francisco based private driver service Uber was co-founded by a Canadian named Garrett Camp (of StumbleUpon fame), and had recently added Toronto to the list of 11 cities that it services. The company, which provides an on demand private driver service, ordered using Smartphones integrates the use of GPS to identify the drivers that are closest to your current location. Once a pick up is requested, the nearest professional driver is dispatched along with a text message sent to you indicating his/her arrival time and name. As an added convenience, no fare or tip is ever exchanged as the total cost is calculated by Uber and billed online.

Uber’s rates vary by city as well as the type of vehicle you select from their repertoire. The current Toronto offering includes Black; the default option which provides a high end sedan that seat up to 4 and the newly added SUV option, which transports 6. Uber determines fares based on a bevy of factors including a per kilometre and per minute rate ($2.50 and $0.80 respectively) as well as a base fare. The base fare for those keen on an SUV is $23.00 as compared to $8.00 for a sedan, however when you need to get somewhere in a group, a professional driver in a shiny black vehicle is tough to beat. If you select a Black vehicle and have an SUV show up, fret not as you will be charged at the Black rate. Minimum fares are $15.00 and $30.00 for Black and SUV respectively. For the sake of simplicity, flat rates are also available for common destinations such as Pearson International Airport.

Uber is currently in the midst of expanding aggressively, with Vancouver being the second Canadian city to receive the service. Vancouver residents will be limited to Black vehicles, however this was also the case for Toronto not too long ago. The next frontier seems to be Europe, with London and Paris being added to the ever expanding list that includes North America’s Metropolises.

Uber’s service is available 24/7; however cite that wait times may be longer during the hours of 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. on weekdays.
