Mobile phones have become such an integral part of our daily lives that many would quiver in fear at the thought of parting with their devices. With the advancement of smartphones, consumers can do a whole bevy of things that amount to more than simply dialing or receiving phone calls. However despite the availability of various new services and smart phone applications, it seems that text messaging still ranks as one of the most popular smartphone activities, particularly among Canadian users.

Those who are interested need not look any further than the latest statistics that were issued by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA). According to the newly collected information, the number of Canadian users sending text messages is continually increasing nationwide. In the second quarter of this year, Canadians had sent slightly less than 24 billion text messages total.

This latest statistics means that during a single calendar month, Canadians had sent roughly eight billion text messages, accounting for nearly 270 million messages daily.

To compare, last year Canadians had sent 78 billion texts, as per the same study. The rate of growth in text messages can be seen in taking the statistics from 2010 into account, which show that 56.6 billion messages were sent by Canadians in that year. Projecting for the entire 2012 year, there is a high probability that Canadians will beat their previous record by the end of 2012 if people in Canada continue to send text messages at their current pace.

The expectation is that the number of text messages sent in Canada by the year end will near 90 billion, an absolutely incredible statistic that is not likely to decrease anytime soon.
