Acclaimed news source, the Wall Street Journal made it known in an updated report that Google has recently handed out the test version of its Maps app for iOS devices. The newspaper gained this information through a source who as always had “direct knowledge of the matter”. It was also learnt that this new map app by Google has not yet been submitted in the Apple’s App Store, as the company has yet to approve this app.
However, analysts remain of the view that this Maps app by Google may not receive approval from Apple because of reasons ranging from the bad blood between Apple and Android as well as the fact that Apple launched its own map based application in iOS 6 device few months, replacing the native Google Maps that had been a part of the iPhone since its inception. Apple’s map application was widely criticized, making the decision an even more controversial one.
It seems that Apple had made that decision in haste, as consumers found the new iOS map app far from useful due to bad directions in some parts of the world, an issue for an app built around mapping and directions. This issue caught fire and disrupted the reputation of the company. As a result of the issues, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook had to come out and formally make an apology to their customers through an open letter.
Since then, Apple has been working on its map app in an effort to make it better, but so far there has been little news of success. In the mean time, Apple has not restored the Google Maps app in its store. In fact, in his letter of apology, Cook suggested consumers use alternate mapping apps like Mapquest and Bing, both of which are available in the Apple Store instead of going back to Google Maps.
Analysts therefore believe that Google’s new Maps app, which also includes Google Voice based voice searched directions may not receive approval from Apple. Moreover, Apple has already taken a lot of time testing this new app without any word of approval
Another reason for the delay could be that Nokia that has produced their very own mapping app, which is receiving rave reviews. The company has just launched a mapping service for the mobile web and is now planning to introduce the iOS app in the near future.
