SuperSite for Windows has claimed that sales figures of Windows 8 PCs are “well below Microsoft‘s internal projections” with the company referring to these results as “disappointing.” Paul Thurrott has shared these details after receiving the information from a “trusted source at Microsoft.” The source also stated that Microsoft is not very happy with PC manufacturers and thinks that the lower PC sales are due to their “inability to deliver.”
The technology giant has stayed out of the hardware game ever since its creation, unlike rival Apple. However, recently the makers of Windows launched their first self branded tablet called the Surface which featured its updated Windows 8 and Windows RT operating system. This move reportedly annoyed many manufacturers because they felt like the company was cutting into their market share. With the latest comments from Microsoft about manufacturers being the main cause of slow Windows 8 sales, it seems that the software giant is not too please with manufacturers and the results they are delivering.
The post does not have any sales numbers so it is hard to state how far below projections actual sales have fallen. The only figures that are available come from Microsoft in which they stated that 4 million copies of Windows 8 have been sold while Surface tablet sales have been “modest.” There is no mention in Thurrott’s report of how many Windows 8 PC’s Microsoft expected to ship, however with 1.25 billion Windows software users worldwide, 4 million seems like a very small number.
The head of Windows, Steven Sinofsky, was recently fired from Microsoft and this may indicate that the company is facing some sort of issues with its core software offering. However, with the poor economic climate and historically dropping PC sales may also be factors in the poor sales numbers being reported for Windows 8 PC’s.
