Foursquare, a location based social network, has grown rapidly thanks to the popularity of smartphones and their continued adoption by consumers. The startup now has 25 million users worldwide and recently announced that it had gotten its 3 billionth check-in.
Foursquare was over the moon two years ago when it reached 380 million check-ins and clocked in the biggest growth the company had seen since its founding in 2009. The company hid several other milestones including the Rally to Restore Sanity and a check-in from outer space. The social network got its 1 billionth check-in during September 2011 which was only 9 short months after the 380 million mark. In September 2012, Foursquare announced that it hit 2.5 billion check-ins and was averaging 167 million check-ins a month, good for 6.2 million check ins per day.
All the growth has occurred because not only is the social network based on a solid idea but also because the company has continually worked to improve its service and the experience for the user. Originally the service allowed users to check-in and let friends and family know your location. Now the service allows users to interact with where they check-in and derive value from their visits. For example users can now use OpenTable to make reservations at restaurant and can also use the Explore feature to get recommendations from others about venues anywhere in the world.
The company had other landmark moments this year as it got a check-in from Mars and worked with Starbucks to fight against Aids and got 35,000 check-ins resulting in a $35,000 charitable donation. Today, Foursquare employees over 100 staffers and has offices in New York, San Francisco, and London.
