The USPTO published an application from Microsoft for a new patent that shows that the maker of Windows looking to replicate a device similar to Google’s Glass project. In the patent application, Microsoft shows glasses with a heads-up display system. The idea is to let the user see the world around them normally and overlay information through the glasses. Microsoft’s idea still seems like it is in the planning stages while Google’s Project Glass already has working prototypes that are being testing in the real world.

The Microsoft patent application describes a purpose-driven tool that’s designed to be put on when a user requires it in their work or play. Google’s device is meant to be left on at all times. For example a user can wear the Microsoft glasses when watching a baseball game and see an overlay through the lenses of box scores, pitch speed, pitch count and a lot of other relevant stats. Microsoft may be looking to target users that may not feel comfortable using the glasses if they were meant to stay on all the time.

Microsoft’s glasses are meant to be used in a stationary position specifically at live events. The application describes the glasses as, “A computer implemented method providing supplemental information to a user with a head mounted display viewing a live event, comprising: receiving an indication that a user is attending a live event, the live event having an event duration; determining a field of view of the user through the head mounted display, and objects within the field of view at the live event; retrieving supplemental information describing at least the objects in the field of view of the user during a portion of the live event; determining elements of said supplemental information to present to the user in the head mounted display; and displaying the supplemental information in one or more display elements in the head mounted display.”

The AR/HUD glasses are a good idea for Microsoft because they can be used to connect other devices like the Xbox and Kinect. The company may wait to put them into production after seeing the results of Google’s glasses and how the market receives the new device.
