Although the iPad is still the head honcho of the tablet world, Canadians as a whole have warmed up to the rest of the field to some degree. To be fair, a lot of this has to do with the competitors catching up to Apple and introducing excellent devices of their own, the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity and Google Nexus 7 to name a couple. Incredibly though, the competitor who has managed to strangle the most market share from Apple is Canada is none other than RIM and their PlayBook.
Even with the 16 GB model being taken out to pasture recently, the PlayBook family of tablets currently accounts for an impressive 19% of the Canadian marketplace. In fact, the next closest parties are Acer and Asus at a meager 6% and 5% respectively.
The iPad and its three generations still account for 56% of tablet sales, however that figure has fallen considerably since last year. According to the SRG survey, Apple owned 80% of the Canadian market last year, signifying true dominance over the competition.
Although PlayBooks haven’t exactly been flying off the shelves, they have clearly earned a following. Much of this can be attributed to a much more reasonable price point than Apple’s iPad, however the company itself is due their share of the credit. Although their apps leave something to be desired, the tablet itself is a quality piece of tech that offers a bevy of compelling features.
It is natural that Apple would eventually lose market share, but to see how much more moving forward remains to be seen. Their portion has been falling steadily over the past 3 quarters says SRG, and with the Microsoft Surface coming to Canada soon, the competition is heating up.
