Holding a smartphone while driving a car can easily get you a ticket, as using a mobile phone while driving is considered illegal across Canada and most of the U.S. states because it can cause serious accidents. This issue is exacerbated during long journeys, when driver usually start feeling bored, many of whom break the aforementioned mobile phone rules in order to be entertained while driving.

Seeing a potential opportunity available to them, two entrepreneurs Matt Albrecht and Jacob Silber from Boston have found a solution for driver related boredom. The duo has commenced a new startup called BRIGHTdriver that will introduce new kindx of games for your iPhone that do not require you to hold your smartphone while driving and playing

The new and exciting games from BRIGHTdriver are audio based, meaning drivers do not require hands to play them. They can therefore engage in gaming while driving a car without any fear of causing an accident or getting a ticket because playing BRIGHTdriver’s games will be no different than taking a call on hands free.

In discussing the idea behind BRIGHTdriver, co-founder Albrecht shared, “We both had really boring commutes and found the existing entertainment options either tiring, like radio and podcasts, or dangerous, like texting and phone calls. We wanted to allow people to access their smartphone in a safe way to stay socially connected, and entertained.”

This led the duo to develop the idea of BRIGHTdriver that is now “a completely new way to reduce distracted driving through its “Smart Passenger” concept of interactive entertainment. Using high quality audio, voice recognition, and a road assessment algorithm, the company has created a way to keep drivers both entertained and engaged during their daily drives,” says Albrecht.

Currently BRIGHTdriver is incubating in the Dogpatch Labs that is to be established in Cambridge, MA, where it shares the facility with 30 other startups. At this point in time, the startup offers three different games; Careoke a sing along game, Best Mile challenges players to drive their best and safest mile and Volley, which is a pub style game.

Users will be able to play these games all by themselves or against the other passengers in the car and even against their “friends, who are driving on their own,” once BRIGHTdriver would be able to successfully raise funds for their launch through Kickstarter.

As far as the future plans of BRIGHTdriver is concerned, Albrecht told Nibletz, “We will launch our platform and first two games this winter. In addition we are in partnership discussions with major car insurance carriers and car manufacturers about implementations of our technology to applications such as teen drivers, fuel efficiency and long haul trucking. We are also exploring how the technology can be extended to enable interactive overlays on existing radio shows. Drivers could have a hands-free, safe way to answer polls, win contests and engage radio show hosts. A lot is happening!”
