Science fiction is full of stories that show robots with artificial intelligence going rogue and harming humans. Some writers have even shown the entire human race being controlled or overcome by intelligent machine. This all seemed like a childish day dream several decades ago but with today’s advancements in robotics, artificial intelligence and the inclusion of electronics in more day to day tasks the possibility it is looking much more realistic.

That is why philosophy professor, Huw Price; the Astronomer Royal of Britain, Martin Rees; and Skype co-founder Jaan Tallin, want to look at the possibility of a robot invasion. The trio has created the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk and is looking at how nanotechnology, biotechnology, artificial life and climate change could work together to cause a robot rebellion.

Price believes that the threat of robots taking over is only possible when artificial intelligence is better than human intelligence. He states that when machine intelligence surpasses that of humans the robots will take over. However he does not see them as evil overlords and instead describes them as “machines that are not malicious, but machines whose interests do not include us.”
