On September 19 of this year, Taiwanese mobile manufacturer, HTC announced two Windows 8 based phones, the 8X and 8S. At that point in time, HTC was planning to intro these two Windows Phone one after the other in markets worldwide.
The latest updates reveal that HTC would not make its entry level Windows Phone, the 8S available for sale in the United States. The smartphone maker has made it known through a recent statement that the multinational corporation deems the 8X as its “signature Windows Phone” and as a result are focusing on this higher-end smartphone for the U.S. market thereby stating that the 8S “is not currently planned for distribution in the U.S. market.”
Sources reported that HTC had to shift its focus towards its “signature Windows Phone” because Microsoft decided to test the Qualcomm 8960 chipset that comes in the 8X prior to the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset of the budgeted 8S Windows Phone. As a result of this move, HTC had to cancel its original plan to launch 8S for T-Mobile. This indicates that HTC 8S may have missed its chance for official telecom carrier support.
Therefore, observers are expecting that now HTC 8S may come out unsubsidized and unlocked on different e-tail sites, which will be accessible for US buyers still interested in procuring said device.
On the other hand, the HTC 8X was not only recognized as the flagship launch smartphone for Windows Phone 8 by Microsoft, but it was also released for sales in the US during the last month with top telecom carriers like T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and AT&T.
