Scanadu got its start in January 2011 with seed funding of $2 million to revolutionize health monitoring. Their idea was a health monitoring device that connected to smartphones to transmit and analyze health related data constantly. The body’s vital signs are an essential indicator of how well everything is working and up until now, people have not measured and recorded this sort of data on a regular basis without incredible amounts of effort and equipment. In most cases, individuals only end up getting get their vital signs checked when they go to the doctors’ office. With Scanadu users can now control their own health data just like any other part of their life.
On November 29, Scanadu announced that it is scheduled to release three products within the next year. The product portfolio for the startup will now include Scanadu SCOUT, Project ScanaFlu and Project ScanaFlo. SCOUT will help user’s record vital health data like blood pressure and heart rate, ScanaFlu will automatically test saliva for ailments and ScanaFlo is a urine testing product.
California based Scanadu now has 20 employees and is growing at a very healthy rate. Now that the company has its prototypes ready they need to pass the FDA approval process. After these inspections are cleared, the startup needs funding to finance its large scale production.
Scanadu should have bright future as most experts are predicting the health care industry to become more quantitative. This means doctors will be looking at a lot of data to figure out problems with the body for various groups of patients. Scanadu’s products will help gather this data and also lessen the load on care givers as people learn to self diagnose with the tools from the startup.
