MIT Media Lab explores the realms of technology, multimedia and design to create some of the coolest tools and prototypes intent on solving human-machine problems. One interesting piece of work that has come out of the interdisciplinary group is the LuminAR. The device is essentially a light bulb that projects images on to a desktop which users can interact with exactly like a touch screen.
LuminAR creator, Natan Linder, used a camera, projector, and a compact wireless computer to develop the tool. The device can be plugged into any standard light fixture and functions as a stand alone device so the user does not need wires running to a computer. The product can project different kinds of information for the user and has a gestural user interface which can be used to interact with the LuminAR.
According to MIT Media Lab, “LuminAR transforms surfaces and objects into interactive spaces that blend digital media and information with the physical space. The project radically rethinks the design of traditional lighting objects, and explores how we can endow them with novel augmented-reality interfaces.”
Users can utilize the LuninAR in a number of ways like turning it into a secondary screen in a work or home environment. Mashable says that the device can also be used to take images of items on the desk and then emailing the picture directly from the lamp. Check out the impressive system in the video below.
