2012 has been South Korean electronics giant Samsung‘s most successful year to date. During this period the company set numerous records for sales and achieved various other milestones. These achievements include the release of one of the world’s best smartphone with the Samsung Galaxy S III which gave Apple’s iPhone a run for its money in the third quarter of 2012.

However, most important achievement that the Korean company made during 2012 was gaining the title of world’s largest smartphone producer. The multinational company gained this title by surpassing the record of previous ruler of the industry, Nokia. Samsung has made this huge accomplishment with the help of two significant flagship devices known as Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II.

But it appears that Samsung is not stopping here, as the electronics giant is aiming even higher and is now looking to become the world’s largest cellphone maker by producing more feature phones and smartphones than anyone else. Although, fourth quarter results are not out, it is expected that Samsung has sent out 410 million mobile phones during 2012 and according to the Korea Times the company is looking to achieve the 510 million cellphone mark by next year.

If Samsung is successful in achieving the huge figure, the company will be looking at an increase of 20 percent in shipments from 2012. This report came from an “executive from one of Samsung’s key suppliers” who stated that “of the 510 million handsets it plans to sell, 390 million are slated as smartphones and 120 million, feature and budget phones.”

Although there is no more information on shipments or breakdown of the cellphones over the basis of Windows, TIZEN and Android OS, it is likely that Samsung will make more cellphones than before, as its much anticipated Galaxy Note III and Samsung Galaxy S IV are going to be released in 2013. However, no news relating to the number of Windows Phone 8 devices is available.
