Mobile app developer Storm8 had a great Christmas this year as the company saw 2 million downloads of its games in one day. The holiday has become a big day for game developers thanks to strong sales of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices. When users unwrap their new presents on Christmas they tend to hop on line and download applications to use on their devices immediately.
This phenomenon rewarded the San Francisco Bay Area-based Storm8 quite handsomely this year. The download numbers were four times the amount the company normally sees on Tuesdays during the year. This is 4.5 times the level of average revenue per daily active users. The casual game developer stated that their games got 2.5 million hours of game play on Christmas day with themed items like Christmas trees getting a lot of attention.
Storm8’s jump in activity is fast becoming the norm for game developers during the holidays. Analytics firm Flurry reported that Christmas Day gets 17.4 million device activations. This is a four times jump from normal days and is also similar to what was seen last year. Flurry also added that app downloads increased to 328 million on the big day.
Storm8 was founded by some former Facebook employees that have bootstrapped their way to success. The firm currently has 150 employees and has gotten 400 million downloads of their games. All this was done without the help of Venture Capital companies or money.
The company’s big numbers are comparable to other game developers like Rovio who states that they receive 1 million downloads a day for the popular Angry Bird games.
