Reddit has become a very popular social news site over the years and nothing proves it more than the recently announced statistics for 2012. The website has seen a tremendous jump in visitors over the past year and in 2012 Reddit has gotten 37 billion page views from 400 million unique visitors that have read 30 million posts on the news site.
The Next Web reported on Reddit’s popularity and shared stats that showed the website had gotten 1 billion page views in February 2011. That number doubled by the end of the year and by October 2012 the social news site was boasting 3.8 billion monthly page views from an incredible 46 million unique visitors.
When a website starts taking in so many vistors it needs the IT infrastructure to support the traffic. Reddit has been upgrading its servers as its visitor count has increased while also adding staff to help handle the huge numbers. All the upgrading requires money and the site has been pushing its paid subscriptions and advertising services to generate cash for operations.
Reddit’s social news model is a big draw but the site has really delivered a hit with its high-level “ask me anything” (AMA) sessions. Previously the site has brought in President Barack Obama for an hour-long interview that overwhelmed the sites servers with users. The Mars Curiosity rover team also got an AMA along with Gangnam Style’s PSY, and U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren.
According to Reddit the following are the top 10 posts for 2012 based on the most number of page view:
