CES 2013 has seen many devices and gadgets unveiled by big technology firms but some of their thunder was stolen on Wednesday when new venture Pebble unveiled its highly anticipated wireless watch.

Journalists, visitors and people online all watched eagerly as the company, which made waves with its idea for a wireless watch on funding platform Kickstarter, finally showcased the much anticipated gadget. After the unveiling it was no surprise that there was so much hype surrounding the device.

Weighing in at 38g the watch connects with Android and iOS devices wirelessly through Bluetooth 4.0 with the ability to display text messages, twitter feeds, Facebook messages and also boasts other cool functionalities that have made it such a crowd puller at CES.

The watch which comes in a variety of colours also contains an accelerometer, is fully water proof and has an e-paper display. Through the watch users can also control their music and its watch face is infinitely customisable thanks to tonnes of apps available. Oh yes! It also shows the time.

Pebble will be available to buy for $ 150 with the watch expected to start shipping to customers later in January as the company first tries to fulfil a backlog of 85,000 orders. The launch had been delayed for four months before Wednesday’s press conference due to the company implementing advanced hardware allowing for upgrades via software.

Eric Migicovsky, Pebble’s founder and primary engineer speaking to the Guardian after the launch said:

“We’re pushing it out there. I’m really excited to hear back what people think.”

The response was overwhelming with those following the live online feed tweeting positive first impressions of the device. However, the watch has not been used by anyone outside the company.

These are early days but as critics get their hands on this cool gadget more information about the device will be revealed including possible glitches.
