A report released by industry analysts International Data Corporation has revealed that the Sony PlayStation 3 has finally bumped Microsoft’s Xbox 360 gaming consoles in sales.

The Sony PlayStation 3, released for consumers a full year after the Xbox 360 hit the market, reached 77 million in sales during December 2012 according to IDC’s statistics. This has left Microsoft’s console trailing by approximately one million units.

Microsoft had a huge advantage as it launched its console earlier than Sony while the Xbox 360 also boasted more games at the start, due to developers’ frustrations with the complex programming required by the PlayStation’s cell processor. That advantage though has now disappeared as the PlayStation 3 has overtaken the Xbox 360 in sales.

The report by IDC anticipated that sales of the videogame industry will increase even further when the next generation of consoles will be released by both Sony and Microsoft.

IDC gaming research manager Lewis Ward, who developed the report, wrote:

“With the advent of eighth-generation consoles, starting with the Wii U, historical norms strongly imply that game disk revenue will stop bleeding in 2013 and rise substantively in 2014.”

He also played down the threat from set top boxes and web connected smart TVs to the console industry.

“It doesn’t appear that alternative platforms set-top boxes from cable companies, Web-connected smart TVs, and so on are positioned to materially disrupt the trajectory of the ‘big 3’ console OEMs in 2013 or 2014.”

Sony’s increased sales of the PlayStation 3 show that the console is still going strong with the Christmas season playing a major role in helping the console to overcome the Xbox 360.
