Finnish mobile manufacturer, Nokia, has been losing market share as Android based smartphones and Apple’s popular iPhone hit the market. Korean consumer manufacturer Samsung has also taken a bite out of Nokia’s dominant position in the feature phone sector. Nokia has failed to produce handsets that can really challenge Android powered phones and iPhone because of which the cellphone maker not only lost a big chunk of its market share, but it also lost the prestigious title of being the “world’s largest mobile phone making company” to Samsung.

However, with the arrival of Microsoft’s Windows 8 it seems that the future may hold some good news for Nokia. The recent fourth quarter results from the Finnish company have been a lot better than expected. Due to this reason, Nokia’s shares also performed well on the stock exchange, as they jumped up and gained a 19 percent increase during regular trading hours.

Nokia managed to achieve these excellent results because of its Windows based phones sales including the Lumia 920. As the mobile phone maker shipped 6.6 million smartphones in the fourth quarter, out of which 67 percent belonged to the Lumia line. These number a good for Nokia but do not threaten iPhone and Android based phones.

However, Research In Motion must be worried over these results, as the Blackberry maker is battling hard to become the third option platform after iOS and Android. On the other hand, Nokia’s profit was not only boosted by Lumia’s sale, but it had also to do a lot with patent fees, as the company received $65 millions in terms of copyright royalties plus a sturdy performance from the Nokia Siemens Networks unit.

Nevertheless, in spite of all these things, Nokia has still issued a conservative forecast about its first quarter’s results, as the company does not feel that its handset department will show a profit.
