There is a new mobile operating system that will soon hit the market to challenge the complete dominance of Google’s Android operating system. Tizen a new mobile operating system based on Linux is currently under development with the backing of smartphone giant Samsung and chip maker Intel.
Already there is news that major mobile phone makers are looking to adopt the new system, which is being billed as even more open than Google’s Android. Supporting HTML5, Tizen allows wireless carriers to deliver their own services instead of depending on Google to deliver.
On Android most of the services built in are Google’s. Even though the operating system allows tweaking by 3rd party many of Google’s services become unavailable like on Amazon’s Kindle Fire. This is something Tizen will seek to provide allowing carriers to provide their own services over Google to subscribers helping them to build much stronger relationships.
A number of companies have already announced support for the new operating system. Samsung has officially announced a Tizen based smartphone to be released this year. Others are also jumping on board with NTT Docomo committed to selling devices running the OS this year.
The backing of Samsung is the biggest positive for Tizen as the Korean giant brings its marketing and technical expertise which will greatly help in promoting the new mobile operating system.
Analysts are also aware of the important role that Samsung will play if Tizen is to be successful in the future.
Julien Blin, an analyst at Infonetics told Cnet:
“It is up to Samsung to drive adoption and awareness of the Tizen platform.”
In 2013 consumers will have another mobile operating system to choose from as Tizen based phones start making inroads into the market.
