When an internet service provider intentionally slows down the speed of the internet the practice is called bandwidth or internet throttling. This problem is quite common with the internet service providers in developing countries, as they do it to manage internet traffic and reduce bandwidth congestion. However, now it seems that even developed countries are facing internet throttling. As new report has just unveiled that consumer complaints related to internet throttling has touched an all time high in Canada during last year. The new report was released by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission during this week, as they issued their annual status report on “Complaints Related to Internet Traffic Management Practices”. The report revealed that in comparison to a two year period which lasted from 2009 to 2011, just 67 complaints were received in the entire period, but in 2012, 75 complaints were made related to internet throttling.

This was a big jump in the number of internet throttling complaints has alerted authorities in Canada. The accused companies, Rogers Communications and Bell, were asked to improve their services. In spite of pledging to prevent throttling the previous year both companies failed to meet their commitment. Many users believe Rogers is a major offender while Bell is a close second.

Vancouver-based OpenMedia remarked that, “It will be especially interesting to see what the CRTC’s report on complaints in 2013 will say”. Besides this the organization also mentioned that both Bell and Rogers promised to stop all throttling from this year.
