Near-field Communication or NFC is the latest technology that has got technology companies as well as consumers excited with the possibilities. Incorporated in many smartphones available today NFC has become an easy way for two devices to share small amounts of information together that too securely.
At the recently concluded CES exhibition in Las Vegas most new consumer electronics on display incorporated NFC technology from television screens, washing machines to even rice cookers. These devices used the technology to interact with smartphones or share information with just a tap.
When NFC first came to the fore it was mostly seen as a brilliant way for consumers to pay for purchases by just tapping their NFC enabled smartphone to the cash machine. However, it seems that the technology is being used for everything else except payments as not many NFC enabled cash machines are available.
Scott McGregor, CEO of connectivity chipmaker Broadcom, speaking to CNET about the technology said:
“NFC really simplifies things. The most advanced technology is stifled if it’s not easy to use. … NFC plays a very valuable role in simplifying user interfaces for consumer products.”
With so many devices at CES incorporating NFC technology it will not be long before consumers can communicate with their smart electronics using their NFC enabled smartphones.
Brian Siegel, Sony vice president of marketing also said:
“We’ve been talking about it collectively for a long time, and it’s been this combo of wireless and wired solutions. NFC and Sony’s One Touch, we believe, is the easiest solution ever brought to market.”
