A latest survey undertaken by wireless provider Rogers Communication has shown that even though Canadians own some of the latest gadgets available they are not too savvy with technology and have little knowledge of the intricacies of charges, wireless security and data usage.
Rogers tested 1,001 Canadians for the survey with those selected having a cellphone, HD Cable, tablet digital cable, mobile broadband and a phone line.
Results from the survey will be eye opening for most as 57% of those surveyed failing the test even though many had some of the latest available gadgets. Amir Dewji, a performance coach at Rogers said that the results showed that Canadians have the coolest gadgets that have led them to believe that they suddenly know all about technology.
At the start of the survey Rogers survey asked the participants to rate their knowledge about technology with 60% giving themselves a B grade. However, after the test results only 4% met the criteria.
“So, what we’ve learned is there’s definitely a clear role for education.” Dewji said.
Positively though 87% said that they wish to learn more about technology to grow their knowledge.
On roaming most Canadians knew the basics that it is activated when travelling abroad by using another carrier’s network. However they did not know how the charges were calculated as well as the cost of using data and other services when roaming.
From the survey it was also found that 60% were not aware of how Internet Data Usage is calculated. 64% also got questions on online safety wrong with little knowledge of how to ensure security of their devices on wireless networks.
The survey shows that there is still much room for educating people on technology.
