OpenSignal, the app that creates independent maps of mobile phone networks, has been upgraded with new more powerful features. The app now provides even more detailed information on mobile network coverage helping users to choose the best one in their area.
The latest upgrade allows OpenSignal users to identify where the network signals are coming from with the built in compass pointing to the location. Network coverage maps crowd-sourced from Android devices also let users know the strength of signals at their location while the Network Rank tab compares the various mobile networks available.
A newly included stats tab allows for testing of data speeds and connectivity as well as the signal strength history. This is not all, OpenSignal also identifies the nearest open Wi-Fi connections for users.
Only available on Android devices for now, the app will soon makes its way onto the iPhone providing even more correct statistics for users through crowd-sourcing. With OpenSignal there is no more reliance on data provided by cellular providers with the complete picture available right onto your Android Smartphone.
In an announcement on the launch of the updated version the company said:
“For far too long consumers have had to accept the statistics that network provide about their own speed and coverage, and it’s part of our project to open up this information for general consumption. Everyone who downloads our app helps to contribute to our database and improve the quality of our information.”
Simple to use and highly informative this app provides all the details needed to select the best network for your area.
