Samsung’s dominance of the smartphone market continues as the South Korean giant maintained its position as the leading mobile phone maker in the world during the final quarter of 2012. According to data compiled by research firm ABI, Samsung shifted 106 million devices out of which 60 million were smartphones in the final quarter.
This data varied with results posted by other research firms but all figures pointed to only one thing and that was Samsung’s total dominance of the smartphone market while being well ahead of fierce rival Apple.
Data showed Samsung’s share of the smartphone market at 31% well ahead of Apple’s 24.5% market share. The rest of the market was divided between other smartphone makers particularly Nokia, Research In Motion and Chinese company ZTE.
ABI also said that 45% of all devices shipped during the quarter were smartphone devices according to another research firm IDC. This shows a growing trend the world over to turn Smart instead of buying old handsets. The growth in share of smartphones is also due to the lower costs while the influx of Chinese manufacturers is also playing a major role in increasing shipments of smartphones.
ABI though points out that this trend is having a negative impact on Apple which now must either move to lower cost iPhones or depend on customer loyalty as the days of its huge growth are well and truly over.
“Unless Apple is willing to trade iPhone margins for low cost iPhone shipments, Apple’s handset market share will become dependent on customer loyalty.”
