Back in March, Amazon got hold of book review site Goodreads. At that time no one would have thought that the community site would increase its user base, but on Tuesday, July 23rd Goodreads made it known that the total number of its user base has touched the 20 million mark. This was indeed an incredible achievement by the book review site that allow users not only to share their thoughts on different books, but also enables them to give full reviews on titles, which are quite useful for both bookstores and publishers.

The significant thing about this milestone is that since August 2012 Goodreads has been able to double the number of its users. According to the founder of Goodreads, Otis Chandler, his site has 25 million reviews and users have added over 620 million books in the review library. As a result of that a huge number of people first read reviews about a book on Goodreads on their mobile devices before purchasing it from the book store.

It is because of this very reason usage of Goodreads has also increased on the international level, Chandler told TechCrunch. Goodreads made the announcement through a post on its blog in which the founder of the company not only cherished the remarkable achievement, but also shared a letter from a fan, who has been using the site since 2007. Here is the announcement:

“Big news today at Goodreads! We now have 20 million members, up from 10 million members just eleven months ago.

Seeing more and more readers on Goodreads is inspiring, but what’s more important is what’s happening as a result. One of the main reasons why Elizabeth and I founded Goodreads is because we believe in the power of books. We believe the ideas you find inside stories can truly change the world. We believe that books make the world a better place. It’s why the Goodreads mission is to help readers everywhere find and share books they love. So, you can imagine how much it means to our team to get emails like this:

This is really just a fan letter to tell you how much I adore Goodreads and how much I appreciate its mission. I’ve been using it since 2007 and it’s been integral in introducing me to books and authors that have changed my life (to be maybe a touch melodramatic). Anyway, that’s all. Just wanted to thank you for creating it!

All best, Corinne.”
