The current model of Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD tablet has yet to make its debut in Canada, but rumours of its 7-inch version that is speculated to be priced at $99 have already started whirling and it is expected that the new slate will roll out sometime during this year, according to TechCrunch. If the speculation turns out to be true then there is a high probability that Amazon would be able to outshine the low end Android powered tablets in the market. Given that so far no company has offered an HD tablet at a price tag of $99. The report also claimed that the alleged $99 Kindle Fire HD tablet will boast the same TI processor and 1280×800 resolution that the current $199 7-inch Kindle Fire HD slate offers.
Previously this month, Amazon declared that it has reduced the prices of the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD tablet, which indicates that the slate maker may be looking to clear stock before it announces the next model. A $99 price seems astonishingly low for a HD slate and raises doubts about the eligibility of the report, but the Research Director of IDC on tablets, Tom Mainelli says such a device “actually sounds reasonable”.
Mainelli says, “Amazon’s competition isn’t just the iPad, it’s all these low-cost tablets running Android. Over Black Friday and the holidays in particular, you could get a $199 HD tablet from Amazon, the slightly cheaper non-HD version, or you could buy a $99 (or even in some cases $79) Android tablet from relatively unknown manufacturers in places like Walgreens, CVS, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and elsewhere.”
He also said that, “The infrastructure is definitely in place for Amazon to go even lower. If they can sell the product at roughly what it costs to build, that fits their long-term vision to make money selling you content on that device. It’s entirely possible – physically possible – to create a device that costs $99, particularly at the scale that Amazon would do it.”
However, Amazon put a full stop at the end of all these speculations, as a spokesperson of the company told Business Insider that they are not readying a $99 Kindle Fire HD slate: “It’s not happening–we are already at the lowest price points possible for that hardware.”
According to Amazon it has no plans to introduce 7-inch HD tablet that is as cheap as $99 because it is not possible for the company to develop such a device in this budget.
