NPD DisplaySearch’s analyst Paul Semenza has claimed that the next generation of the full-sized Retina iPad also known as iPad 5 is likely to sport a newly designed LED backlight, which possibly will reduce its weight and thickness. The analyst has also indicated that a lighter and thinner design of LED will be developed partly by creating more efficient displays and partly by utilising superior LEDs. Semenza further said that as far as other modifications to trim down the thickness of iPad 5 are concerned the manufacturer might switch to improved touch screen sensors that should be film-based.
The display analyst from NPD DisplaySearch mentioned these details in an email that was sent to CNET. In the communication Semenza said that, “It’s likely that part of the thinner/lighter design will be reducing the size of the LED backlight, partly by making the display more efficient and partly by using more efficient LEDs.”
Semenza said, “He said he also expects other modifications to reduce thickness. “The other significant change that we feel is likely is a shift to a film-based touch sensor.”
When it was asked from the analyst when Apple will release the iPad 5, his replay was something like this, “the third quarter is most likely”.
“It’s still a mystery whether Apple will change the display tech, though. It is not yet clear if there will be a big change to the display — such as using IGZO,” he added. (IGZO stands for indium gallium zinc oxide.)
“That technology has been pursued by Sharp and was originally expected to land in the third-generation Retina iPad — but didn’t. Sharp’s IGZO tech is used in smaller devices sold in the Japanese market.”
Generally it is observed that as a company rolls out the successive models of its products they get smaller and slimmer. However, this was not the case when Apple launched iPad 3 and iPad 4 because these slates were using additional technologies in order to support the Retina Display. As result of that both iPad 3 and iPad 4 were more thicker and heavier in contrast to its predecessor the iPad 2.
Recently leaked images of iPad 5 have indicated that the sides of its bezel will be narrower like the iPad Mini, which is perhaps not a revelation for many, as Apple often takes design clues from its own devices. For instance, iPhone 5’s colour scheme is almost identical to what we have already seen in the iPad Mini.
