At this point in time, Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS software have captured the majority of the mobile device market share. Of the two, Android based devices are doing better as compared to iOS, simply because they are offering more innovation while being available at low in prices as well. Due to this reason, Android based smartphones and tablets are giving Apple’s iPad and iPhone a real tough time.

The strength of Android’s operating system can be judged from this report by Canada’s IDCaccording to which three of every four smartphones that are shipped globally are powered by Google’s software.

Research Manager of mobile phones at IDC, Ramon Llamas said, “Android has been one of the primary growth engines of the smartphone market since it was launched in 2008. In every year since then, Android has effectively outpaced the market and taken market share from the competition.”

However, more choice and low price are not the only two factors that have made the Android powered devices a huge hit. The major reason behind its success is that Google is giving away Android free of charge, leading the majority of mobile manufacturers to latch onto it due to its quality and value. This enables Google to make money from various services that it offers on its Android versions like maps, search engine and content on the Google Play store.

Apple on the other hand  is still quite stiff when it comes to offering both hardware and software as well as online content like games, music, books and lot more on its online shop. Ken Dulaney, Vice President of mobile computing at Gartner explained this phenomenon by saying that, “What you get with Android is this incredible feedback loop with developers, equipment makers, customers, and designers”. At Apple, as long as they have a great vision internally it is fine but they don’t have the feedback Android does.”

As a result of that, the market share of Apple’s tablets has not only fallen to 50% from 65% in the 2nd quarter against Android, but Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone Galaxy S III has also clinched the world’s  best selling phone title from iPhone 4S in the previous financial quarter, which lead Dulaney to this view:

“The pace of innovation in Android is faster than Apple. They are just trying harder; Apple is way behind in that area.”
