According to comScore’s recently released report, Android has seen their U.S. market share grow from 50.8% to 52.2 in the quarter ending July 2012. In comparison, the same time period saw Apple’s market share increase 2% from 31.4% to 33.4%.
The above means that the two largest mobile platform providers now represent a whopping 85.6% of the overall Smartphone market with a collection of smaller players completing the picture. Such players include RIM’s BlackBerry OS, Microsoft’s Windows Phone system as well as Nokia’s Symbian platform which represent 9.5%, 3.6% and 0.8% of overall market share respectively.
A major factor in Android’s overall success has to do with the platform’s widespread use over a myriad of devices from various manufacturers. Among those, Samsung has seen the largest sales increase thanks in large part to their popular and widely acclaimed Galaxy S III device.
According to the same report, Samsung devices are still the most widely used, representing 25.6% of overall market share (down slightly from 25.9% in April 2012). The electronics giant is followed by country counterpart LG, who represent 18.4% of the overall U.S. market. Apple saw their market share increase by 1.6% from 14.4% to 16.3%, quite an impressive feat given how many Apple heads are awaiting Q4’s iPhone 5 release.
It will be extremely interesting to see how the dynamics shift in the next quarterly report given the aforementioned iPhone’s release as well as Windows 8 devices coming to market as well.
