One of the main distinguishing factors separating BlackBerry from smartphones made by Apple or other Android-using smartphones is the lack of apps the former has. Research in Motion’s highlight creation, BlackBerry, focused more on emails and messaging rather than introducing more apps that, according to the RIM officials, were not necessary when the smartphone was launched.
However, the perception that apps are not necessary was rubbished when Apple, Samsung and other companies started receiving positive response from the market. The encouraging response mainly resulted in the increase in the smartphone users across the globe. While the BlackBerry still targeted a selected few, mainly the corporate people, the other smartphones were reaching out to a broader audience that involved teenagers as well.
This eventually led to decline in BlackBerry’s market share while the developers also looked for other platforms to showcase their talent. The Canadian-based BlackBerry manufacturer has now rightly identified the current market trends and it has opened up a large platform for developers for the BlackBerry 10 that is going to be launched within a few days.
As per some rough estimates, the BlackBerry 10 will have around 70,000 apps at the time of its launch, while many developers have shown keen interest in making apps for the new smartphone. According to The Globe and Mail, a mobile application developer, Macadamian, has received interest from a number of developers who are willing to create apps for the BlackBerry 10. It quoted Doug Michaelides, managing director of Macadamian’s Ottawa office, as saying:
“There’s certainly been a steady increase in volume of requests – and urgency of requests. As we approach the launch date, more and more people are seeing the opportunity and are not wanting to be left out.”
The BlackBerry 10 is scheduled for launch on January 30, and it is expected to receive good response from the market, especially because the new version of the smartphone is created keeping in view the need of the current time and the next few years.
