California based tech titan Apple finally unveiled their hotly anticipated iPhone 5 at a standalone event yesterday at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The device, arguably the most ballyhooed of the company’s history, features many of the specs that we have reported on in the months leading up to the launch event.
As reported, the device features a larger screen, measuring in at 4” screen with a 1,136 x 640 resolution. The larger screen, geared towards the increasing need for a quality browsing and display will use a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. As the device is the same width as its predecessor, the phone has a longer and sleeker looking overall profile. The new resolution means that apps created for older iterations of the iPhone will feature a black bar on each end of the screen.
The device is thinner and lighter than any predecessor as well, coming in at 7.6 mm thick (18% thinner than the iPhone 4S) and 112 grams (20% lighter than the 4S device). The increased focus on thinning the overall profile of the device means that the new phone will feature a aluminum back as compared to the current device’s glass rear.
The iPhone 5 will also represent the company’s first 4G LTE smartphone. The wireless browsing experience will also be considerably faster thanks to 5GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi capability as well as the new Apple A6 processor, said to be 22% smaller than its predecessor and twice as fast.
The device will feature a smaller dock connector, known as the ‘Lightning’. A $29 adapter will be made available for those wishing to use older connector cables. All in all call quality will also be improved thanks to three distinct microphones, one each on the top and bottom of the device’s front as well as one on the rear. These mics will surely aid Siri in doing what it does.
The iPhone 5 is available for sale starting September 21 in Canada, the U.S., Japan, the U.K., Germany, France, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore. Although pricing has not been confirmed, we expect the 16 GB model to be available for $199 with a 3 year contract and the 32 GB and 64 GB models priced at $299 and $399 respectively.
