Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller has taken a shot at Samsung and Android ahead of the launch of Samsung’s latest smartphone in the U.S., saying that the device might use older version of the operating system rather than having something new.

Samsung is the biggest user of Google’s Android that has given tough time to Apple’s iOS. Moreover, Samsung has taken away Apple’s dominance in the global smartphone market by attracting a large number of users in nearly every part of the world. Together, Apple and Samsung almost dominate the entire smartphone industry.

This year is so far quite bothersome for Apple as it first of all had to bear pressure from shareholders and now the company is seemingly struggling to come up with a new and creative product to outclass its competitors. The frustration in Apple’s camp is understandable as the company is already under pressure from all directions and while it desperately attempts to regain its lead in the market, Samsung continues to expand its user base.

However, things are much more different if one is to look at all these developments from Apple’s perspective. Schiller is of the view that Samsung’s new phone will debut with a year-old operating system rather than having something fresh, something he does not consider very impressive. He said, via Reuters:

“With their [Google] own data, only 16 percent of Android users are on year-old version of the operating system. Over 50 percent are still on software that is two years old. A really big difference.”

Not only that, Schiller also mentioned that many smartphone users are switching to iOS rather than Android, contradicting the general impression that many Apple lovers are switching to Android-using devices now. The number of smartphones released by Samsung itself speaks for the popularity of the company, but Schiller does not agree to the fact that introducing a large number of devices in the markets can attract customers. He said:

“At Apple we know that it’s not just enough to have products pumped out in large numbers. You have to love and use them. There is a lot of data showing a big disparity there.”
