Several reports have so far claimed that Apple is developing an inexpensive plastic model of the iPhone, but now Reuters has reported that sources from some Asian supply chains have informed that the Cupertino-based company is planning to make large screen iPhone, which will boast 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch displays.

“Apple is looking at introducing at least two bigger iPhones next year – one with a 4.7-inch screen and one with a 5.7-inch screen – said the sources, including those in the supply chain in Asia. They said suppliers have been approached with plans for the larger screens, but noted it is still unclear whether Apple will actually launch its flagship product in the larger sizes.

“They constantly change product specifications almost to the final moment, so you’re not really sure whether this is the final prototype,” said one person with direct knowledge of the matter.”

Besides this, the publication of Reuters article has once again repeated previous rumours according to which Apple will integrate fingerprint sensor into the iPhone 5S, whereas the inexpensive plastic model of the flagship phone will come in five to six colours so the company could extend its market share in emerging markets. One person has claimed that Apple has talked about a price tag of $99 for the low cost model of iPhone, but no one knows what will be the final price of the new device.

Two sources on the other hand have said that the test production of inexpensive version of iPhone and iPhone 5S is set to begin in July, while the mass production of the two handsets is slated in August, so the California-based company could finally launch it in September.

“Trial production was originally planned to start in June, but the mixing of colours is taking longer than expected as Apple has very high and idealistic standards, said one source in Asia, adding 20 million plastic iPhones are expected to ship in the October-December quarter.”

Rumour has it that the displays of iPhone 5S models would be produced LG Display and Sharp while Foxconn would be the manufacturer of the device. The inexpensive model of iPhone would be produced by Pegatron, a rival of Foxconn.

The publication of Reuters suggests that Apple’s decision to produce large screen iPhone models is actually based on its competitor Samsung that is looking to produce smartphones of almost every size. Galaxy Mega, the latest smartphone of Samsung is one such example that sports a display even bigger than the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II.
