Apple left Samsung behind by shipping the most number of mobile phone devices in the U.S in the fourth quarter, according to Strategic Analytics. This is the first time ever that Apple has topped this race.
Apple shipped around 17.7 million out of total 52 million phones in the quarter. The reason behind Apple dominating the market was the high demand of its iPhone 5, while the company also attracted a lot of customers by offering discounts on iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.
USA Today quoted Strategic Analytics executive director Neil Mawston as saying:
“Apple’s success has been driven by its popular ecosystem of iPhones and App Store, generous carrier subsidies, and extensive marketing around the new iPhone 5 model.”
Apple’s main rival, Samsung, was not behind either. It shipped 16.2 million phones in the quarter. According to CNET, Mawston mentioned that Samsung would be keen on beating Apple by becoming the market leader once again. Mawston said:
“This was a good performance from Samsung, as its market share rose 5 points from 27 percent a year earlier, but it was not enough to hold off a surging Apple. Samsung had been the number one mobile phone vendor in the U.S. since 2008, and it will surely be keen to recapture that title in 2013 by launching improved new models such as the rumored Galaxy S4.”
Whether Samsung is going to launch Galaxy S4 or not, we are pretty much certain that it would come up with something to get past Apple. However, Apple, too, can surprise the market this year as many rumours with respect to this company have also been doing the rounds of late.
