The plummeting stock price of Research In Motion (RIM) may indicate to many on Bay Street that the makers of the BlackBerry smartphone may be heading down the road to irrelevance in the competitive sector. However, the RIM has gotten a vote of confidence from an unexpected institution: The Dictionary. It has recently been revealed that the word BBM will find itself in the latest edition of the Collins English Dictionary. Collins dictionary will categorize the word as an abbreviation, noun and verb to cover all the different ways the word can be used. Collins adds new words to its dictionary only if they meet its strict standards and is not just a passing fad. RIM has picked up on the relevance of the inclusion and has been vocal about it s as a sign that the company is still very popular.

T.A. McCann, who is the vice-president of BBM and social communities at RIM, was one of the first people to make a statement and said that the latest dictionary edition highlights how BBM has become one of the most popular mobile social networks. RIM is also quick to point out recent references in pop culture to BBM including Olympic Gold Medalist Usain Bolt’s statement that he would use BBM to thank people after he won his most recent accolades at the 2012 Olympics. RIM was also quick to point out popular songs like “Miami to Ibiza” and the “BBM.” by Tinie Tempah and Sean Kingston show how much a part of life the BBM service has become.

With BB10 and related devices scheduled for release next year, RIM is hoping that the good news will help it stay on course until its much anticipated launch. The new line up may be the Canadian firms last chance to turn its fortunes around.
