Apple had previously stated that only three carriers Canada were offering unlocking for the iPhone. It seems that Bell will now be joining TELUS, Rogers and Fido in offering the service to its clients. The first Canadian wireless providers to offer iphone unlocking were Rogers and Fido in December of 2010. TELUS eventually offered the unlocking service in June of 2011 and Bell has finally joined them this month.

Rogers and Fido offer the unlocking for $50 while TELUS started off at $50 but have reduced the price to $35 since then. Bell has changed their policies to accommodate users who want to unlock their iPhone and the wireless carrier is proposing to do so for $70. All subscribers need to do to avail the unlock service is to give their IMEI number to Bell and restore their iPhone in iTunes.

As of right now no set date and time have been given as to when the service will be active. However, Bell representative have told iPhone In Canada and some of its readers that the service will be available very soon and the unlock fee will be $70.

Users prefer to unlock an iPhone so that they can move their smartphone to other carriers. Previously, wireless providers did not prefer that users move away from their network because they would then lose out on service fees and billing. However, many have now decided to offer users the service if they pay the subsidy that the carrier is providing.
