Microsoft, the developer and distributor of the Windows Operating System, has penned a new partnership with California based startup Klout. In a joint announcement to the press the companies described the nature of cooperation in which Klout’s data will be used in Microsoft’s Bing search engine. Similarly, Klout will use data generated by Bing search its own ecosystem to fortify its unique offering.

Microsoft states that the integration of data between the two companies is a “strategic investment” that should pay dividends in the long run. The makers of the most used operating system in the world also mentioned that the announcement was only the first step in a relationship that will continue into the future.

Microsoft’s search engine currently utilizes data from social networks like Facebook, Quora, Foursquare and several others. Now users that use Bing with the social search feature selected will find that the results will also display a person’s Klout score. On the other side, Klout will get a different set of data points from Bing including how many times a name is searched and which links are clicked in the search results. Another piece of data that Klout will take from Bing is the “People Who Know” category of the search engine. Any person named in that section will get recognition on Klout.

Microsoft has mentioned that they will immediately start providing Klout data in Bing results for their users. However, it seems Klout will need a little more time to incorporate Bing data into their system and users will start seeing changes in a few weeks. Either way this is an incredibly exciting merger of companies trying to better themselves through synergy.
