Canada based BioWare Montreal will be steering the popular Mass Effect video game series and the company has committed to using Electronic Arts’ graphics engine to create the upcoming game. Mass Effect is in development right now and veteran lead producer of the series, Casey Hudson, remains the executive producer. However, other than Hudson all other aspects of the game have been handed over to the BioWare Montreal. Yanick Roy, studio director for BioWare Montreal has confirmed these details in a blog post on the company site.
In his post Roy talks about the game engine and also the direction the game will take by stating that, “I can not really tell you much about the game at this time, except that it will be built on the incredible technology of the Frostbite engine, which the Dragon Age III team has already spent a lot of time building. The other thing I can tell you is that, while [the next Mass Effect] will be very respectful of the heritage built over the course of the first three games, with the original trilogy now concluded and the switch over to a new engine, we are exploring new directions, both on the gameplay and story fronts.”
Roy was sparse on details but fans should expect the fourth edition of the games to continue many of the original themes from the previous games. The game should also have a cinematic story that guides the gamer through the galaxy as they encounter different races, taking full advantage of the advancements in graphics and gaming since the last Mass Effect game.
In the blog post Roy also stated that BioWare Montreal would be hiring new team members for next year and that interested candidates should keep coming back to BioWare’s job posting site to get details when they are available.
When creating video games, developers have to make a game engine that lets the visuals of the world they want to produce possible. This is the most time consuming part of the development but a graphics engine like Frostbite cuts down the time spent on this because it is a customizable solution that game developers can use. Mass Effect is the latest game the Electronic Arts has switched to DICE’s Frostbite graphics engine.
