Waterloo-based smartphone maker, BlackBerry, released its financial report for the second quarter of 2013 on Friday, June 28th. The results were not striking at all and contained poor earnings during the period. The report also unveiled the low statistics of company’s PlayBook that had shipments of around 100,000 units only. Perhaps this was due to thw poor show of PlayBook that BlackBerry CEO, Thorsten Heins, decided to make a u-turn and announce at the earnings call that the slate would not get a BB10 update now. This was the opposite of what Heins had said before when he made a promise to BlackBerry fans that his company woul make the BB10 available for PlayBook.

Nevertheless, this was not the first time that Heins has decided to go back on his words, as earlier this year the CEO of BlackBerry predicted that tablets could become obsolete within the next five years. He was found saying that “I don’t think there’ll be a reason to have a tablet anymore,” during an interview with Bloomberg at a conference in Los Angeles back in April.

Besides this Heins was also caught saying that tablets “are not a good business model,” in spite of the fact that Apple’s iPad has immensely boosted the revenue of the Cupertino-based company. Heins also claimed back in November 2012 that BB10 would simply outshine laptops, as users would not feel the need to use them any more. He said, “You will not carry a laptop within three to five years.”

In the same timeline of five years, Heins claimed that BalckBerry will once again achieve the top slot in the mobile market place. Heins said to Bloomberg that, “In five years, I see BlackBerry to be the absolute leader in mobile computing—that’s what we’re aiming for. I want to gain as much market share as I can, but not by being a copycat.”

But now it seems that Heins has to reconsider what he had said earlier because during the second quarter BlackBerry has posted a revenue of $3.1 billion and lost $84 million. As a result of this poor earnings, the stock of BlackBerry slid down by more than 27 percent during the trading hours on Friday.

On its earnings call Heins said that,“During the first quarter, we continued to focus our efforts on the global roll out of the BlackBerry 10 platform. We are still in the early stages of this launch, but already, the BlackBerry 10 platform and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 are proving themselves to customers to be very secure, flexible and dynamic mobile computing solutions.”

He also said that, “Over the next three quarters, we will be increasing our investments to support the roll out of new products and services, and to demonstrate that BlackBerry has established itself as a leading and vibrant player in next generation mobile computing solutions for both consumer and enterprise customers.”
