Bringing more than 70,000 apps to their latest BlackBerry 10 platform will be tough for BlackBerry, especially considering the fact that Canadian company has claimed that the 70,000 apps will be specially made for the new platform. However, BlackBerry’s efforts have supposedly fallen short in one aspect according to an executive at the company who has confessed that 40 percent of apps on BlackBerry World are ported from Android. This confession was made by Martyn Mallick, who holds the VP of Global Alliances and Business Development post at BlackBerry.
Mallick admitted this, while talking to the reporters after the launch event of BlackBerry 10 came to an end. He said, “40 percent [of BB10 apps] are wrapped Android applications,” and majority of them came to pass as part of the Port-a-thon that BlackBerry conducted before the launch of the BB10 platform. Port-a-thon was basically an opportunity for developers to earn some more cash if they move their functional app to BB10 version with the help of porting tools provided by BlackBerry.
The story does not end there an it has also been reported that loads of BB10 apps are nothing more than just shortcuts to various mobile sites. This may not be good for the business as BlackBerry is considered a reliable name when it comes to offering both hardware and software.
The Canadian firm may have failed in its lofty goals because creating a large number of app in a short period of time is not an easy task and BlackBerry did not want to fail on its promises.
