BlackBerry to Shut Down BBM Music from June 2nd, Offer 30-Day Free Trial to Rdio Instead

BlackBerry has recently sent out an email to its subscribers in which the Canadian company has made it known that its BBM Music service will be not be available to them from June 2nd. The Waterloo-based company also mentioned that the “Date may be subject to change.” BlackBerry has launched the BBM Music service in 2011 and just two years after that the company is now shutting it down. The music service was specifically launched for the BlackBerry Messenger users in order to enable them to share their favourite music on the BlackBerry device with their contacts on the BBM friends list. Although, BBM Music had some limits like the user could not share more than 50 songs through the service, also yje $4.99 monthly fee was also charge to users for using the service, but it was still quite popular.

 

BlackBerry did not mention any reason for shutting the BBM Music service in its email, but rumour has it that the maker of BlackBerry Z10 is looking to give its consumers the best possible experience and its music service was not up to the mark. Similar services offered by other platforms are doing better because the music services of other platforms are more lucrative and they also possess a better selection of music content.

 

Here is a piece from the email that BlackBerry has sent out to its subscribers”

 

“BBMT Music service will be discontinued as of June 2, 2013*. For paying customers, April is the last month that you will be billed. In May, as your BBM contacts stop using the service, songs in your playlists will begin to turn grey and will no longer be available.

 

Though BBM Music is going away, you can still listen to great music on your BlackBerry. We’re giving you a 30-day pass to Rdio, which gives you unlimited, on-demand access to more than 18 million songs, including the latest hits and classic albums.”

 

However, at this point in time Rdio service is only available on older models of BlackBerry, whereas the latest handsets of the Canadian manufacturer have a different music service known as Songza that is free of charge.

 

The popularity of streaming music service over cell phones has increased a lot in the past few years, especially with the advent of services like MOG, Grooveshark and Spotify. Apart from this, CBC Music is Canada offers free music streaming music on demand to BlackBerry, Android and iPhone phone users.
