BlackBerry launched its brand new BB10 platform at the start of last month. Since then one question that has been asked more than any other: When will the Waterloo-based company launch the next PlayBook with the latest BB10 OS? Recently answering this question, CEO of BlackBerry, Thorsten Heins completely ruled out the chances of introducing the next PlayBook, as according to him it’s not on their priority list. However, now the director of product management at BlackBerry, Mike Al Mefleh has revealed for the very first time that the Canadian smartphone manufacturer is likely to introduce six new models of BlackBerry devices during this year along with a new PlayBook. Mike made this statement at the Dubai BlackBerry User’s Forum, but he did not give any further details of the next PlayBook. Nevertheless, it is highly likely that Mike was talking about the 10-inch model of PlayBook, which fans caught a glimpse of last summer.

At this point in time nothing can be said for sure about the exact launch date and the specs of the new slate, but it is anticipated that as time passes by more information about the next PlayBook running BB10 will surface in the news. Officials of BlackBerry at the User’s Forum were tight lipped about the timeframe of the forthcoming tablet, but one anonymous source at the event revealed that an update of BB10 will arrive first for the current PlayBook Models after which BlackBerry will launch the next model. Another source hinted that the next PlayBook could make its debut as soon as the end of the second quarter of this year. One of the developers has even said that currently they are readying a BB10 app, so it could be optimised for the forthcoming 10-inch PlayBook.

So in spite of getting mixed indications from the officials of the BlackBerry, one thing is for sure that BlackBerry is working on a 10-inch tablet and it will most probably launch it during this year, but whether the company is going to release it in this summer or not is another question. Still it’s pretty enticing to hear about the new PlayBook, as it might be the first slate from the Canadian manufacturer that is expected to be running the BB10 OS.

Prior to this, CEO Throsten Heins has said that BalckBerry World is expected to see 100,000 apps by the time they will launch the BB10 in the US on March 22nd.
