In a move to gain an advantage over its rivals, New York based content streaming provider Boxee has teamed up with Sigma to bring its services direct to third party smart television sets.
Boxee is facing increased competition from rival services such as Google Fiber, Roku and Apple TV as well as gaming consoles in the content streaming market leading the company to move from its own dedicated hardware to third party smart TVs.
System-on-chip solutions provider Sigma is coordinating with Boxee to put all of its services into a single Sigma UXL processor. This will allow smart TV manufacturers to include Boxee’s cloud based services into their latest products with no problems.
Both Boxee and smart TV manufacturers will benefit from the new UXL processor as television manufacturers can easily increase the capabilities of their devices providing greater value for money for consumers while Boxee will receive increased brand recognition and market share putting it a step ahead of competitors.
Avner Ronen, CEO of Boxee said that his company’s services on Sigma’s UXL processor will create a smart TV experience that is “delightful to use, and robust enough to be relevant for years to come.” While also becoming the “easiest way for manufacturers,” to create a better experience for consumers.
This is not the only partnership made by Boxee to gain an advantage in an increasingly competitive market as last month it concluded a deal with Opera Software in order to include a range of HTML5 applications into its set-top box.
The UXL platform has been put up on display for smart TV manufacturers at the ongoing CES 2013 exhibition in Las Vegas.
