Intel has named its chief operating officer Brian Krzanich as the company’s new CEO who will replace Paul Otenllini during its annual shareholder meeting on May 16. The move comes as a disappointment for some investors who were hoping for the company to select someone from outside the organisation so that some rash changes could be made to tackle the company’s present difficulties.

The company itself had also hinted earlier to select someone from outside, but all the speculations died when its board of directors unanimously agreed to make Krzanich the new chief. Krzanich has been serving as Intel’s chief operating officer since 2012. Intel chairman, Andy Bryant, said in a statement:

“After a thorough and deliberate selection process, the board of directors is delighted that Krzanich will lead Intel as we define and invent the next generation of technology that will shape the future of computing. Brian is a strong leader with a passion for technology and deep understanding of the business. His track record of execution and strategic leadership, combined with his open-minded approach to problem solving has earned him the respect of employees, customers and partners worldwide. He has the right combination of knowledge, depth and experience to lead the company during this period of rapid technology and industry change.”

With the PC market progressing very slowly – declining actually – Intel faces a stiff competition of sustaining in the market either through staying within the field and coming up with something new or jumping on the bandwagon and enter the competition in the smartphone and tablet industry. Many analysts are of the view that it would have been easier for someone from outside the company to take some tough decisions to secure the long-term interest of the company. Krzanich, they argue, being the inside guy, might not be able to do the same. However, he seems upbeat about the challenges present in front of him. He said:

“We have amazing assets, tremendous talent, and an unmatched legacy of innovation and execution. I look forward to working with our leadership team and employees worldwide to continue our proud legacy, while moving even faster into ultra-mobility, to lead Intel into the next era.”

Meanwhile, the board of directors has elected Renée James to be the president on Intel.
