A major internet content delivery network based out of Cambridge, Massachusetts called Akamai Technologies, Inc. releases a quarterly report known as The State of the Internet, collecting massive amounts of internet connection related data.

Some of the most valuable and telling information concerning the way the world is connecting with the internet in terms of national speed in relation to the world. The report has never been more relevant than today, when strong broadband connections play a larger role in our lives than ever before.

According to GigaOM, the latest report states the following for the first three months of 2012:

– The average global connection speed was 2.6 Mbps

– The global average peak connection speed was a much better 13.5 Mbps

– South Korea (home of Samsung) has the highest average connection speed in the world at an impressive 15.7 Mbps

– Hong Kong is the nation with the highest average peak speed at 49.3 Mbps

The report foes into further detail regarding connection speeds, measuring nations based on two separate categories; high broadband and global broadband. High broadband is classified as 10 Mbps or greater while global is reserved for 4 Mbps or greater. Canada ranked eight globally in terms of global broadband, with 68 per cent of connections being above the requisite 4 Mbps. The total represented a 15 per cent increase as compared to this quarter last year and a whopping 11 per cent as compared to the last quarter alone.

This means that Canadian connections are improving, which is great news for us all. Hopefully we will be able to grace the top ten of the high broadband list sometime soon.
