TechVibes revealed on September 24 that on a per capita basis, Canadians download more illegal music than anyone else in the world. Even though Canadians have a reputation for being law abiding citizens, it seems that overpriced internet services and extremely low caps on downloading have not deterred people from downloading free music.
The data used to pin point Canadian internet users illegal activity was gathered from an analysis of BitTorrent users by MusicMetric, an analytics firm for the music and entertainment industry. The analysis also revealed that Canada is behind the US, Britain, and Italy in overall illegal music downloads in terms of volume. Another piece of data that was released in the report was that BitTorrent facilitated approximately three billion downloads of songs and albums in the first six months of 2012.
MusicMetric also reported the top downloaded songs for different countries around the world in its Digital Music Index. According to the report, in 2012 Canadian’s top chose for illegal download was the Kanye West and Jay-Z album, Watch the Throne. The report also pinpointed that fans of the Canadian Pop Punk band Hedly were the most likely to download music illegally.
The report may put the music industry on high alert and previous actions of the industry have shown that they are willing to take extreme legal action to protect their artists and business. However, it seems that recording artists and companies are losing the battle and more and more people are finding ways to download illegal music all over the world.
