Me-ality is a Canadian startup that aims to solve one of the biggest issues with online retailing of clothes: sizing. As many shoppers know, even when buying clothes from a brick and mortar store, trying on clothes is one of the most important parts of the purchase process. This is because not every manufacturer creates similar clothing sizes. Also different body shapes can make clothes fit differently from one frame to the next. The problem of clothing fit variation is exasperated further in the e-commerce world where, unless a buyer has bought a company’s clothes before, there is no certainty of fit. This is an issue that may be holding back a large number of shoppers from buying online.

Me-ality uses a body scanner technology to create a custom fit for online shoppers. Created by the firm Unique Solutions, Me-ality is a large booth which scans the user’s body in 10 seconds and offers up the exact measurements along with body type. The technology has an astounding 200,000 data points that are utilized to create a fit that no other device is able to do today.

There are currently no scanners available in Canada even though Unique Solutions is located in Nova Scotia. However, the scanners can be found in the US where 800,000 people have already used the Me-ality devices. The company is part of a fast growing sector that is trying to improve the online shopping experience by offering solutions to common e-commerce problems.

As of now, there is no business model for the body scanners. One route to profitability is that the Canadian company makes its own clothes based on the data it has collected and develop sizes that are most statistically common. This would give them some efficiency in manufacturing and near perfect fits. This may require a lot of investment to set up and a cheaper solution would be to take a commission from retailers already selling online. One major problem that Me-ality will face in this scenario is the fact that off the rack item manufacturing will not change their sizing to fit the body scanner users. Overall, the future for the company looks bright as long as they are able to figure out a plan to make money from their idea.
