Vancouver based UrtheCast is looking to become the first group to live stream views of the earth from space. The Canadian firm is in ground breaking territory after it partnered with the International Space Station and has worked out a deal to put a high-resolution camera on the station in order to give users on earth a real time view of space.

Rutherford Appleton Labs, a company located in the United Kingdom, has developed the camera that will be used by UrtheCast. The High Definition camera has a view of a 40 kilometer radius and will be in place through the Soyuz Mission. Once everything is operational, UrtheCast will be sending out the world’s first “simultaneous broadcast of space in high definition video that can be streamed by anyone around the world” in 2013. UrtheCast has also developed some interactive tools for users that resemble Google Earth and YouTube. People that watch the live feed can “scroll, pan, zoom, and search their way around the Earth video stream.” UrtheCast will use top of the line technology to let users view anything on the earth’s surface and also tag current events and places.

The Canadian firm’s blog states that, “Earth video data collected by the cameras will be down-linked to ground stations around the planet and then displayed in near-real time on the UrtheCast web platform, or distributed directly to exclusive partners and customers. UrtheCast will provide this interactive platform and HD Earth video data for internet users, app developers, educators, media outlets, government bodies, humanitarian relief organizations, and environmental monitoring services.”

The Vancouver based company has been fairly successful in raising capital and business interest. It claimed a $4.2 million dollar contract with the Canadian space company that developed the Canadarm. $4.5 million were also injected into the firm thanks to Beacon Securities.

UrtheCast has also claimed that their technology could have the “largest potential worldwide audience in history.” With such a gold mine on its hands, Beacon Securities is looking at a brokered private placement by August in which a “reverse takeover” of capital pool company, W7 Acquisition, will take place.
