While there may now be numerous ways to listen to new music and find something fresh just released into the market through the use of apps, websites and other modern day marvels, Canadians are still using the radio as their primary source. As surprising as it may sound, according to a report by Nielsen’s Music 360 Canada, 61% of Canadians come into that category that uses the more traditional way to find music.

Apps like Grooveshark and websites like YouTube are definitely ideal for when it comes to listening to music, but Canadians are not that advanced in this regard just yet. Why this is the way it is may seem a mystery to some who have not touched a radio ever since smartphones came out, but there is no denying the fact that the radio does have a constant and undefinable value to it.

The radio definitely lost its touch as the leading source for music when channels started focusing more on running constant advertisements instead of focusing on what people wanted to hear. Also, people prefer to choose what they are listening to instead of someone making their playlist for them, which is normally what the radio jockey would be doing for a living. There is another category of music lovers as well. Not everyone is looking to play their own music all the time, but also want somebody to introduce them to the latest stuff. This is what has been keeping the radio alive and thriving in Canada and will continue to do so as long as there is music being produced.

Music video discovery is another thing altogether. Unlike the radio or any other medium, the internet has allowed music producers and fans to come alike and create a combination beneficial to both parties involved. The music industry is able to capitalize on the continuation of running advertisements while music lovers everywhere can listen to and watch anything their heart desires.

VEVO is a leading solution in this regard. According to the report, it holds 27% of the share of people discovering music through such newer channels. Satellite radio did not have much impact as only 9% of Canadians rely on it for their music related needs. Smartphones have the rest of the market with the newer apps being released to listen to music on the go wherever you are.

For those that thought the radio was dead, it seems like it is only getting stronger, in Canada that is.
